A Wonderful Trip

Sorry it has been so long since I last put anything on here but since we've been back from Hong Kong life has been very busy.

Anyway friend Jan reminded me I hadn't put any photos of our trip to HK here or recounted any of the wonderful things we did while we were there so here is the first instalment.

The flight over (12 hrs) wasn't as bad as we expected and we all (Jeff, Gareth, Erica, Eric and I)all arrived safely albeit a bit bleary eyed. We were met by Robert,Micky, Andrea and Fooky who whizzed us all off to our hotel in Kowloon. After unpacking and having a short snooze we were taken off for a family meal (this was to become a frequent event. I think we ate for England while we were there!!) Anyway we had a delightful meal with a lot of Erica's family and they were all most welcoming and friendly. The food was delicious and I even managed a reasonable attempt at using chopsticks. It just got a bit disconcerting when you reached to take a piece of food from a dish and the 'lazy susan' part of the table whizzed away from you. I must admit it all passed in a bit of a blur as HK is 8 hours in front of the UK so we were all slightly jet lagged. We took a walk after dinner down to the harbour and that is where it hit me - I was really in Hong Kong!! It was stunning with all the lights shining across the harbour. Truly amazing. I didn't take any photos that night but Jeff did so once he's downloaded his pics on to my computer I will post one of Hong Kong harbour at night. Here is one in daylight

The following day we went across the harbour to Hong Kong Central on the Star Ferry, another iconic image I think

Central is the financial centre of Hong Kong, it has the IFC building which is the tallest building in HK and all the large banks etc. However, there is also an old side to Central where all the traditional shops are. We saw things there which I didn't really want to know what they were used for but who am I to criticise, they have centuries old traditions and what might seem strange to us is quite common place to them. Boxes full of dried sea horses, myriad types of fish, different types of meats all hanging up outside the shops. The next photo is a bunch of Chinese sausages (and very tasty they are too!!!!)

Another meat shop

One of the things that struck me when I arrived in HK was actually how tall the buildings are and how close together they are. The population is expanding and there is so little room to build that the buildings get taller and taller. I think I spent the first couple of days walking round just looking up.

I will post some mdore tomorrow. I think I might even open another blog just for my Hong Kong trip. Not sure yet. Hope you enjoy the random piccies. I have a LOT more""
